Pediatric Orthotics Q & A

Why does my child need pediatric orthotics?

Pediatric orthotics are custom appliances needed for a wide variety of congenital defects, neurological issues, musculoskeletal problems, and more. Your child might need a pediatric orthotic if they have:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Scoliosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Spina bifida
  • Bowlegs or pigeon toes
  • Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome)

Pediatric orthotics can provide support where your child needs it, so they can go about their normal developmental activities. These devices can also help correct orthopedic issues and encourage proper bone growth and alignment.

Which type of pediatric orthotics does my child need?

The team at Ortho Engineering Inc. has extensive experience in designing pediatric orthotics for infants, all the way up through teens (and beyond), and you can feel confident that they’re going to provide high-quality, effective orthotics. Your child might benefit from any of the following common types of orthotics.

  • Cranial helmet
  • Custom shoe inserts
  • Scoliosis brace
  • Knee, ankle, and foot orthoses

Your child is going to continue to grow, especially during their first few years of life, and at some point, they may need to have their pediatric orthotic adjusted or replaced entirely. No matter which type of pediatric orthotic your child needs, rest assured, the team at Ortho Engineering Inc. ensure their orthoses is as comfortable and supportive as possible.

How long does my child need to wear pediatric orthotics?

It depends on how they progress and develop. In most cases, it’s important for your little one to wear their pediatric orthotic device regularly. For instance, if your infant has flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly) due to sleeping in the same position regularly, your pediatrician may recommend keeping their cranial helmet on as much as possible for several months.

Or if your child has scoliosis, they might need to wear their brace during waking hours, but you can remove it when they sleep. The team at Ortho Engineering Inc. work closely with your pediatrician to ensure you understand your child’s orthoses needs and when they need to wear their specialized brace (and for how long).
